Posted: 19 Jun 2011 09:12 AM PDT Cats are delightful animals that have a personality that is unique. They are much like humans in that they know their own mind and are particular about certain things like their food. Here are some tips that may be helpful when it comes to feeding your cat. Cat Mannerisms They don't call cats finicky for nothing. Just one day with them and you'll see why. They can't talk, but their actions often speak louder than words. Cat Bowls Try porcelain or stainless steel bowls for food and water. They don't retain old smells like plastic and are easier to clean. If your cat is refusing to eat it could be the smell. Also, uneaten food in food bowls can go bad. Never put new food over top of old. Just like with humans, saliva mixes with food as it is eaten and it will begin to break it down and it will spoil. Cat Food Cats love pleasant smells such as food – your food and theirs. To keep your cat from nibbling at the side of the food bags in the pantry, keep them enclosed in a plastic container. This makes it harder for your cat to introduce pests and bacteria into their food supply. Change up kitty's food every once in a while. If he or she is used to eating wet food but now won't finish it all, there could be several reasons. One is illness. There will be other signs of illness besides just a change in eating behavior. It could be environmental. Kitty may not want wet food in the summer. Try switching to dry food if you notice a drop off in appetite. Also, change flavors. Cats like variety too. The problem could be something as simple as they are tired of eating chicken flavored kibble and want to try seafood blend or turkey. Feed your cat age-appropriate foods. For kittens, be sure to feed them kitten foods. There are certain nutrients in foods at that age that are needed for their development. The same goes for older cats. And, don't substitute human baby food for baby cats. Different species means different nutritional requirements even at the earliest level. The same goes for feeding adult cats table foods. A few tips can make all of the difference when it comes to feeding your cat or kitten appropriately. |
