| May 2011  | | A young bird watcher gets a few tips during the Festival of Endemic Birds of Cuba. | Cultural Exchange Project We're looking for organizations interested in collaborating in a cultural exchange program focused on birds, art, citizen science, and the creation or improvement of green spaces. Our focus is to connect youth and families in Latin America with participants in the United States.
2011 Mini-Grants Announced Eighteen diverse organizations were selected to receive 2011 Celebrate Urban Birds mini-grants. In addition, we are supporting more than 100 mini-grant applicants with materials and training.

 | | Leaders of the World, Inc. youngsters learning about birds as part of their Celebrate Urban Birds mini-grant project. | Leaders for the World
Take a look at the outstanding work done in Puerto Rico by Leaders for the World, Inc., one of our 2010 mini-grant recipients. The project integrated greening, the arts, birding, data collection, and community service. Students and stakeholders were introduced to the project through a series of six detailed workshops on subjects ranging from habitat, the arts, and data collection. At the culminating event participants collected data on the Celebrate Urban Birds focal species and were introduced to endemic species as well. Make sure you look at the final report. You will be absolutely inspired! (In Spanish only.)

We want to see and read your contributions to the third annual Funky Nests in Funky Places Challenge. Enter before June 1, 2011.
Have you seen any nests this spring? Share them with us! Look in out-of-the-way or out-of-this-world places. Maybe it's an abandoned nest, maybe it's just the image of a nest in your imagination. Absolutely no birding experience needed! Share your drawings, paintings, stories, or video.
Prizes include bird feeders, nest boxes, sound CDs, guides, posters, and books including Nests: Fifty Nests and the Birds That Built Them, by Sharon Beals. | | Funky Nests on Martha Stewart Project FeederWatch's David Bonter was back on Martha Stewart's television show in March to talk about bird nests and eggs. Featured on the show were a series of photos submitted by participants to our "Funky Nests in Funky Places" challenge. Check it out. Birds of Brooklyn  | | Speakers scattered throughout Brooklyn play the sounds of birds no longer found in the borough. | Check out our new web page about the unique Birds of Brooklyn artwork. Artist Jenna Spevack has created a community-based audio project that brings the sounds of Brooklyn's displaced, endangered, and bygone birds to various sites around the borough. You can stand outside a shop or apartment building and hear a bird that might have lived there long ago. Jenna hopes to help city dwellers connect with the natural sounds of the area and raise awareness about declining bird populations in urban environments.
Jenna has also designed an activity for educators and families to help them experience this project.  Get Connected
