IMBD Needs Chart

In 2012, International Migratory Bird Day will celebrate 20 years of activities that increase awareness of birds and their conservation.  We're already planning for this event and will be providing monthly information about IMBD activities for use by educators and event organizers.

Thanks to those who responded to our survey about how we may continue to improve the event for you.  In answer to our question about how we can provide more information, almost 50% said you receive sufficient information, while another 50% want more!  If you didn't take our survey, we're still interested in your input.

Walk on the Wild Side Takes Off!
Big DayTeam Bird Fanatics in Idaho hosted an annual birdathon to raise funds for bird conservation.  In 2011, they joined Walk on the Wild Side and topped their 2010 donations. According to organizer Poo Wright-Pulliam:

[Walk on the Wild Side] gave our small fundraiser credibility and people enjoyed being able to view websites of the entities we would be donating to, along with our own personal stories.

Visit Team Bird Fanatics' Walk on the Wild Side page to learn more about the event and how the funds raised will benefit birds.

Easy Bird Craft

Owl Craft

Try this easy bird craft after teaching youth about owls.  Use a standard brown paper grocery bag and provide eyes, a beak, and wings (older children may want to create these).  Glue all the parts in their appropriate places and color.  To finish, attach a string at each corner at the top of the bag, so that younger kids may hang their "owls" around their necks.

Remember, any bird craft is more valuable when combined with information about bird biology and ecology.  Be sure to explore how owls find their prey, where owls live, and more, so that the activity is meaningful.  Looking for more activity ideas? We have lots!

Intern Brings Bird Education to New Jersey Youth

Sara Ocasio
Sara Ocasio of Puerto Rico joined the team of NPS Park Flight Migratory Bird Progam interns in our efforts to better reach Latino communities. She visited churches, businesses, and schools, talking with Latino residents and giving education programs.  Efforts culminated on June 18th during Harbor Fest, where New Jersey Audubon offered activities for youth and adults, such as birdwatching from the deck.  We'll be sharing the results of our outreach in fall 2011.

Sara and other interns are critical to the success of this project, and we appreciate their hard work!

If you want to learn more about this 3-year study, funded by National Science Foundation, contact sbonfield@birdday.org to receive the monthly update.

CLOSER: FINAL AUSTRALIAN TOUR FOR 2011

Birds of Tokyo are finishing off a monster year with their recently announced Closer Tour. The band will travel to twenty-two towns across the country to play their last shows for 2011 before heading into the studio for the summer.

Joining Birds Of Tokyo will be the increasingly buzzworthy punk rockers Boy In A Box (aka Tij Priddle).
